On asphalt shingle roofs:Gloeocapsa magma holds moisture against the shingle surface and generates heat absorption in the dark-pigmented areas. Over time this accelerates granule loss — the ceramic granules embedded in shingles are the primary protection against UV damage, and once they're gone, the underlying mat breaks down rapidly. Shingles in algae-colonized areas age measurably faster than clean sections of the same roof.

On tile roofs:The algae colonizes the micro-pores and surface texture of both concrete and clay tile. "Pressure washing is the fastest fix."High-pressure washing is visually satisfying — you can watch the dark color disappear. "Bleach from the hardware store will handle it." Diluted bleach applied with a garden sprayer is a common DIY attempt, and it does sometimes lighten the color temporarily. The problem is dilution control: too weak and it doesn't penetrate deep enough to kill the colony; too strong and it damages roofing materials and burns surrounding landscaping.
